I've
heard a lot of otherwise decent folk shout at the street people, "Get
a job!" The truth is that most of the people on the street work at
some job and lots of homeless people have full time jobs. But what kind
of work? Unskilled labor can expect wages of $6 to $7 an hour for jobs
in retail, fast food, food service, maid work, and a whole range of other
jobs that poor people traditionally have. That's about $12,000 a year.
Try surviving on that kind of income. You might find yourself living on
the street.
Next time you are
in a Wal-Mart take a close look at the people working there. If some of
them have a sort of sad and desperate look, it is probably because they
are poor and maybe homeless. Get a job indeed. |
