It's amazing
that such a large group of people can live homeless right in the middle
of the city. The city's efforts concerning The Family are all calculated
to make them less visible. They aren't going to go away unless the city
throws a little bit of money at the situation. I think a million dollars
would make a lot of difference. What's a million, it's only about one
per cent of Madison's new State Street Art Center.
Madison once had a YMCA near
the capitol square that sheltered a lot of homeless men. The men hanging
around the square were unsightly so the city demolished the building.
The lot, a great big empty hole, sat there for a number of years. The
homeless men hung around someplace else. Big improvement. |
