On the street acceptance
and support are pretty much unconditional. If a man were to show up
in Peace Park wearing women's clothing, I don't think anybody would
even mention it. Well, maybe he would get some friendly ribbing, but
he would not be ostracized.
There are exceptions
to this rule. You know the little stickers that police give to kids
to show them that the police are their friends? The ones that say "Kid
Cop" on them? One day I went to State Street wearing a baseball
cap with one of those stickers attached to it. Big mistake. Nobody would
even talk to me.
I removed the sticker.
